DOUGLAS R. KOONTZ, MD


Dr. Koontz grew up in Altus, Oklahoma.  He graduated with distinction from the University of Oklahoma in 1977 with a B.S. in Microbiology. He received his Medical Doctorate degree with distinction in 1981 from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He completed his Neurosurgery residency in 1987 from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Dr. Koontz was trained in all areas of Neurosurgery.

In 1987, Dr. Koontz began a private practice in Enid, Oklahoma as a general neurosurgeon. In 1989, he moved to Des Moines, Iowa, establishing a neurosurgical practice. Dr. Koontz returned to Oklahoma and began private practice in 2004 at Neurosurgery Specialists as a general neurosurgeon. He provides care to those patients experiencing problems with the brain, the spine, and peripheral nerves such as carpal tunnel and ulnar nerve disorders. Dr. Koontz's areas of special interest include spine problems, specifically, motion preservation such as with artificial disc placement.

Dr. Koontz is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. Professional affiliations include:
